Carmen & Lola (ASSF)

Carmen lives in a gypsy community in the suburbs of Madrid. Like every other woman she has ever met, she is destined to live a life that is repeated generation after generation: getting married and raising as many children as possible.

But one day she meets Lola, an uncommon gypsy who dreams about going to university, draws bird graffiti and likes girls. Carmen quickly develops a complicity with Lola and they discover a world that, inevitably, leads them to be rejected by their families. Carmen & Lola explores queer sexuality in a genuine way, as the protagonists attempt to navigate their feelings and the familial traditions that have been forced upon them. Echevarría effectively conveys the difficulty of trying to balance love, family relationships, religion, and figuring out what it means to be a woman. Despite its colourful scenery and beautiful bittersweet moments, Carmen & Lola will break your heart, but it will also give you hope for new beginnings.Nominee for Caméra d´Or and Queer Palm at Quinzaine des Réalisateurs Cannes 2018 Winner of Dunia Ayaso Award at Seminci 2018 Goya Awards for Best New Director and supporting actress 2019
